James H. Rivoir was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1913. Although we know little of his life before and after the war, he worked as a professor before being drafted into the U.S. Army in June 1942.

 

Following his assignment to the MFAA Restitution Branch of the Office of Military Government for Bavaria (OMGB), Rivoir handled various administrative duties at the Munich Central Collecting Point. There, he worked alongside Monuments Men Edwin C. Rae, Capt. Jonathan T. Morey, Sgt. Harry Huberman, and Cpl. Ole C. Risom, among others. Rivoir remained involved in the effort to inspect, identify, and sort thousands of looted objects until at least March 1946.

James H. Rivoir died in 1984, and is buried with his family in Pennsylvania.
